A PUNJABI MUSIC & GENDER LITERACY PROJECT

What rules do songs teach us about being a man or a woman?

A song can give language to love, pride, pain, and belonging. It can also make a social rule feel ordinary. Bol helps you hear both, without diagnosing the artist or blaming the listener.

INSIDE THE AUDITS

Hear the words. Notice the rule.

Explore how songs navigate devotion, heartbreak, status, and power — separating surface assumptions from what the music actually says.

CURATED PATHWAYS

Four guided journeys through 30 years of music.

Explore curated listening shelves contrasting dominant expectations with counter-voices, emotional vulnerability, and resistance.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Music is one voice in a much larger conversation.

Songs do not program people. A repeated message can still become familiar, especially when friends, family, films, algorithms, and institutions repeat the same rule. Listeners also bring their own beliefs and can accept, reject, joke with, or transform what they hear.

HOW INFLUENCE MAY WORK

A loop, not a one-way arrow.

These are plausible pathways supported by broader research. They are not proof that a particular song changed a particular person.

SEVEN QUESTIONS

Hear the rule. Then imagine a choice.

The everyday question comes first. Academic terms and sources are available when you want to go deeper.
